Paul Keller, bass, achieved Grammy accolades on Diana Krall’s debut album, and remains based in Michigan as he plays around the world. His longtime collaborator Cary Kocher, vibes, is a versatile musician from Ann Arbor, where he plays in the symphony, drums and sings, and teaches percussion at the University of Michigan. Their new quintet has its roots in their earliest years, where they sought to package well-crafted tunes and great jazz with smart arrangements, in highly entertaining variety. Two simpatico musicians–pianist Adam Mosley and guitarist Matt LoRusso–arrived on the scene just this year, and a casual rehearsal at the Keller farm one spring morning triggered a flurry of composing, arranging, and adapting to the special combination of vibes-guitar-piano on their favorite George Shearing records. Drummer David Alvarez III joined the “breakfast party†to complete a quintet capable of astonishing range, from the most intimate chamber sound to a rich large-ensemble texture.
